This whole month is being dedicated to Coughs and Respiratory Ailments. So today we are discussing the Croup!

My first experience with croup as a mother didn’t come until my fifth child was in the hospital with pneumonia after her first vaccination. (Yes, she was only 4 months old). Oddly enough, I knew a bit about the croup, but I didn’t know that it could really be dangerous rather than funny to listen to….

The child in the bed next to my daughter was in because he had the “croup”. I couldn’t believe it! I asked why they would hospitalize for a wheezy cough? The doctor then explained that an infant’s trachea was only the size of a pencil, so when they became inflamed, the air couldn’t pass like it was supposed to, and therefore you not only had a funny wheeze, you now had a situation that could be quite dangerous.

So, even though most croupy situations are no more than aggravating, we should still know more about this specific cough.

Croup (or laryngotracheobronchitis) is caused by a virus and leads to swelling inside the throat. … People with croup can have a “barking”cough, stridor (a high-pitched wheezing sound), and hoarseness. Croup symptoms often get worse at night.

So, it is important to know that a cool humidifier can help to relax the inflammation, which in turn can aid in calming the cough. Or, a shower can also help. I used to take my son into the shower when he had the croup. He responded very quickly to a warm steamy room filled with vapor, because he seemed to have a VERY Dry croupy cough every time he became ill.

Oh, And don’t forget the VITAMIN C! Always boost the immune system with C and Tinctures!
