One of the questions that I get VERY often, is about vitamin or mineral supplements.
Growing up, I learned that if you were eating a balanced diet, you needn’t worry about taking supplements. And to a certain extent, that is still true today. However, the sad truth is that today, the food that we have access to in America is sorely deficient in nutrients, due to the severely depleted minerals in the soil that our food is grown from. As far back as 1936, the Dept. of Ag. Wrote a letter the U.S. Congress stating, “…most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until the depleted soils from which our foods come are brought into proper mineral balance…99% of the American people are deficient in these minerals…Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless.”
(Written and printed by the US Congress in 1936)
So, if our food was already lacking 80 years ago, what do you think the situation is now?
So, yes, during times of stress or weakness, it is a good idea to have access to good supplements. I like to take whole food herbs like Organic Spirulina, Kelp, Alfalfa, Beet Root, and other whole food dried herbs. I also recommend Whole Food Vitamins and Minerals.
As an N.D. I have very strong opinion as to why I suggest ONLY Whole Food Supplements, and to make a long story short, I will explain it this way.
The body is a complex, yet simple machine. It needs literally hundreds of vitamins and nutrients to allow proper growth and to maintain proper functioning capabilities. And the interesting fact is every function of every cell in every organ, muscle or tissue needs the perfect combination of vitamins and mineral nutrients, in an exact combination to function in optimum form.
Guess What? Organically grown foods and wild or grass fed meats, come perfectly balanced with the exact combination of these nutrients for various uses to the body! That’s correct! God gave to man everything that he needs in the plants and animals around him! He gave it in a complete way.
Our bodies cannot process processed foods. If a food is altered in anyway; (additions or subtractions from it), then the body cannot read it, so to speak. Our bodies are literally like Gods perfect computer. He designed the human body to thrive on His perfect foods, the way He gave them to us…in all their many, many forms.
Each food is like its own perfectly designed power pill, that comes in a perfectly balanced combination of nutrients to nourish some part of the body in a perfect way. Each food being designed with the perfect combination of vitamins, nutrients, micro nutrients, etc. You need to understand that if you take ONLY Calcium, then your body cannot use it unless it can somehow find leftover Magnesium and Vitamin K from somewhere else! And Protein without Copper! Or Vitamin E without Selenium! Catastrophe!
So, God in His wisdom combines these desperately needed combination nutrients in foods that He designed.
It’s really too simple for our complex minds. Just remember this; Back in the good old days, the average Farmer had a wife and a passle of kids. He had 160 acers, milked 30 cows, which were perfectly conducive to his 160 acres, of which depending on his location, he pastured and raised enough hay and grain to feed his cows and other livestock and in a good year, he sold off the extra as a cash crop to re-roof the barn or buy Ma that new wringer washer that was all the rage. He had a couple of brood sows that each raised 15-20 piglets yearly. Of these he fattened 3 or 4 to butcher himself and sold rest off as feeders. He had 2 -4 dozen laying hens which offered a perfect opportunity to give the kids the responsibility of caring for and “pickin” eggs.
The farmers of the past, painstakingly grew hay, grain and gardens, fed and cared for their animals, then back-breakingly, mucked out after the cows, calves, chickens, and hogs the rich soon to be fertilizer! Usually, it was the kids who pitched this Muck into what is referred to as “pile of manure.” Then after a year or so of composting, this once stinky pile of ick, transforms into literally a pile of Gold! This rich compost then was returned to the field as the perfect food to grow lush, nutrient rich grass, grains and hay.
If it had been returned to the field before the compost was complete, then it would have be too rich in nitrogen…which could actually burn the plants or maybe grow awesome green foliage, but would not be conducive to helping the plant produce fruit…you see, it is all about balance. From beginning to the end. Year after year, decade after decade, century after century…Man is always trying to cut corners because he gets bored and wants to find a “better way.” God says, no-there are no short cuts. It will be done My way, or there will be consequences. (of course I am paraphrasing here, but the point is, we cannot deviate from His way.)
