What are you doing this year for a New Year’s Resolution?

It seems that every time we turn around someone is suggesting that we to Change up our old life and Start Anew! Lose Weight! Quit Smoking! Start Exercising!

Where does this tradition come from?

Well, according to Wikipedia; Historically, the Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans too, began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named.

New Year’s has been the object of “Getting your act together” for quite some time now… But today, making a resolution is mostly a secular sort of hobby.

Personally, I say that if a person has a desire to amend their life, to do something for the good of his body or soul,  then he should, by all means, strive to accomplish this good.

If you can understand that Man is made in the image and likeness of God; That he is Mind, Body and Spirit…

Then you can understand that as we strive to bring our Body under control…we must also strive to coordinate the Mind and Spirit to join the challenge of bringing this Body of ours under control.

And, as Christians, we are taught from little on; that if we plan to accomplish anything worth while in this life, we’d better not forget our prayers!

Our Spiritual life is the most important aspect of our well-being. If our spirit is healthy, then our mind too, will be healthy….and EVERYTHING corporal, begins in the mind….and is transferred upon the body in the form of a symptom.

Whether we have Rosy cheeked health or ill-health, giggles and laughter or tears, humility or anger…it all begins in the mind…and then there is the transference of symptoms upon the body. Having uncontrollable giggles, or a stomach ache, insomnia, fatigue, migraines, arthritis, weight gain / Loss, etc. the list is of symptoms is literally limitless.

The point is, if we want to choose health, weight loss, quitting a bad habit, or maybe your goal is just to start spending more quality time with your family…. Everything must begin with a healthy SPIRIT! Then, our mind will be at peace and our bodies will follow suit!

Here are some helpful hints to bring everything together…

Set Rules for yourself. Organize your day in an orderly fashion. The body, being corporal, thrives on consistency.

“Let all things be done decently and according to order,” says St. Paul (Cor. xiv. 40)

With a rule of life things are done with exactitude; without a rule they have no fixed hour; we defer them, then we again defer them, and we finish by omitting them entirely.”

We have some good old proverbs on the value of order and method:

“Order is heaven’s first law.” _ Pope.

“To him who does everything in its proper time one day is worth three.”

“Method will teach you to win time.” – Goethe.

“There is a time to fish and a time to dry nets.” From the Chinese.

“Set all things in their own peculiar place, and know that order is the greatest grace.” – Dryden.

“Prescribe a certain order for your day. Begin and end the day with prayer. Regulate the time for your meals, for your work, and for your recreation.

“Order is the law of heaven; begin therefore, here on earth a life which you will continue throughout eternity, a life which will be more pleasing to God, more agreeable and satisfactory to those about you, and more profitable for your salvation. There is much merit in the self-restraint and mortification resulting from a rule of life.”

From Fr. Francis Xavier Lasance’s My Prayer Book

So, set a goal, or goals for yourself. Prioritize and organize your day. Make healthy choices and Pray Always.
